US PREP Coalition Members Work Together to Accelerate Innovation

On March 20, US PREP coalition partners convened virtually to address the challenges in shifting clinical experiences to virtual formats. The interactive virtual session started out by prompting leaders to share what they have learned in this short time, recognizing that often times, challenging times can result in new innovations and ideas. As universities have been transforming their colleges of education, it was clear that the new roles they have established, like the Site Coordinator, have been instrumental in supporting their teacher candidates during this time. Brooklyn College faculty noted, “The site coordinator

was able to connect to the partnership schools right away, and all the student teachers in the partnership schools were able to get access into their online sessions.” University of Houston participants agreed and stated,  “We were able to harness the power of the site coordinator relationship to ensure strong communication and expectations for our candidates.”

As the session continued, teacher preparation leaders shared the challenges they are facing. One of the biggest areas of struggle was how to facilitate high-quality experiences in virtual formats. All of the coalition members emphasized the importance of ensuring candidates meet the performance benchmarks that they have established with their district partners, but this can be difficult to accomplish when candidates do not have access to their k-12 placements. The coalition members shared ideas and together, developed a Clinical Experience in Virtual Settings resource. The feedback from the participants indicated

that the session was beneficial. Participants from McNeese said that the resources were really helpful and shared,  “We greatly appreciate being a part of this coalition even more with all that is going on right now.”
